The way it's calculated, you want to get about 20% absorption with high vitality and strength for the most effective defence. Typically, heavier armour will have higher absorption - which is protection against strong/heavy attacks. The difference comes from Damage Absorption. This also means that if you get hit by a dude with a sword/dagger/light weapon, you're going to take the same amount of damage regardless of which armour you're wearing, too. The primary stat is a flat bonus to your physical defence - this is given to you regardless of what type of armour you're wearing (whether it's a cloth robe or plate metal) so it's best to have something equipped in all 4 slots at all times, otherwise you're going to be taking a flat % damage increase. There's 2 different types of defence stat from armour in DS3.
